Help me give my students sensory path items such as agility ladders, body pods, and more to help guide their physical movement and sensory needs during their school day.
I support middle school students in all subject areas. The students I work with deal with delays in reading, writing, math, organizational skills, and life skills. They are a very diverse group yet they are all hard-working, fun-loving, and compassionate individuals. I love watching them find their voices and develop the courage to self advocate.
When you talk about perseverance, you are talking about my students.
They put in quite a bit of energy to try and keep pace with peers who might not experience the obstacles they have. Each of my students have dreams and aspirations for life after school. One student wants to be in the Marine Corps while another wants to play in the NFL. I have a student who wants to work with computers, another student wants to be an artist. I feel lucky to be able to help them work toward whatever goals they have in life.
My school practices inclusion as much as it benefits the students. Students get the best of both worlds in that they are alongside their peers for general instruction and then can work in small group or individual settings to help cement that instruction as needed.
My Project
One thing I have noticed in teaching at a middle school is that the students have a need to move around. I always see students jumping and trying to touch things on the walls or hanging from the ceiling. So many of them have pent up energy and they need a way to release it appropriately during school.
I would like for these students to have a purposeful and accessible way to direct their energy.
I envision having footprints, hand prints, and other visual cues positioned on walls and floors in different areas of the school for students to use for guided physical instruction and sensory regulation. We could incorporate vocabulary into it as well. Examples would be: your feet go here and you have to jump and touch this dot (or word) with your left hand, or use your finger to follow this maze and jump and give a high five to this dot, etc. These materials would help me to create these sensory/ physical pathways. I have some students that are 'wiggly' and giving them chances to get the wiggles out before sitting down and having to focus on material is helpful. Students I work with directly as well as other students would benefit from this. I think the students would enjoy them and it would help direct their actions in a more school appropriate way. Plus we could incorporate learning to it. It would benefit them all around.
