Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 4th (2018-2019), moving to 5th (2019-2020) at a Title 1 , public, elementary school in a rural part of Riverside County in CA. Many of our students are also non-native English speakers which contributes to a wonderfully diverse group of students. Being at a Title 1 school many of our students, approximately 90%, qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My classroom is a family.
What makes our room unique is our attention to relationships. We check in one on one and whole group daily to support, celebrate and uplift each other. My students live in a rural title-1 school with big dreams and even bigger goals. This year we are celebrating a 107% growth in test scores and can't wait to see what next year has in store as I follow them to 5th grade!
My Project
I teach in a tile 1 school, in a rural portion of Riverside Country, California. Our district is on a mission to end the cycle of generational poverty through an education that can lift them and their families out of the cycle. Teaching a child who already has the weight of the world on their shoulders can be challenging to say the least. I have had many students that just learn to live when the electricity gets cut off or who grab an extra muffin for their little sister to eat at home. I do my best to provide my students with love, a safe place, stability, and resources. What I also provide them with is the promise that I will never stop working to better myself as their teacher. I will never stop learning and working to offer them the best educational experience and platform for the future, that I can. I know that my new found knowledge and bag of tricks will allow me to better reach my diverse population of students.
Robert Frost once said, " I am not a teacher, but an awakener." The Get Your Teach On conference would be an opportunity for me to not only awaken and inspire new knowledge within myself as a life long learner but to learn more innovative ways to awaken and spark passions for learning in the minds of my students.
At this conference, I will have the opportunity to collaborate and learn from top-notch teachers from around the country. Through workshops like The Magic of Rigor, Set the Stage to Engage, Actions Speak Louder Than Words, Make Educational Magic with Music, Neon Read On and Get Techy With It, I will be able to bring back innovative and effective strategies back to my classroom.
