Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a highly agricultural area of Central California. Some are high-level advanced placement students while others are lower level 9th graders. The majority of my students are on free and reduced price lunch. Some of them are classified as special needs and/or language learners which is fine since I love teaching all sorts of students!
My students are the reason I go to work each morning!
They are smart, inquisitive, energetic and have a great sense of humor. They are willing to try any sort of laboratory experience, project or activity I throw at them Inquiry-based and hands-on learning are the norm for my students!
My Project
Students have fun in my classroom, become scientists and use the scientific method without even realizing it! Imagine coming to class and finding painted lady larvae wiggling around on the lab counters. For this project, students will use STEM to design the best environment for their larvae and use the scientific method to observe its metamorphosis into a beautiful chrysalis and then a painted lady butterfly. Observations will be made, data will be taken and conclusions will be made about any redesign ideas students think of to make this environment more beneficial to the butterfly's well-being. These butterflies will ultimately be released into the native garden where students will be making even more observations.
Students of all levels, especially those with special needs, enjoy learning science through hands-on and inquiry-based learning.
It helps them retain information in their long-term memory. My hope is that students will think about how important butterflies are for pollination in their natural habitat and think about how important these species are to the health of our environment.
