My Project

As a science teacher I believe that science is FUN! But I know for a middle school student it can also be challenging, overwhelming and even a bit boring. Many of my students are accelerated 7th and 8th graders who work extremely hard to meet the expectations required of them in the high school level courses they are taking. Despite this, I feel very strongly that we can't forget these students are still kids, and kids still need play and socialization at this stage of development. My goal with this project is to give students another option, hopefully an enjoyable one, to reinforce what I've taught in class and to show what they know with non-digital games and engineering materials.

These types of games and activities can create a sense of community while emphasizing problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking, communication and social skills as students sharpen their understanding of science content.

I have chosen flexible and adaptable items that can be used to teach and reinforce every concept we learn throughout the year. The Guess Who game can feature everything from scientists to organ types to elements. The Jenga blocks can be labeled with vocabulary words or concepts to add extra challenge to the game while students review. Lego blocks and Picasso Tiles can be used to teach landscapes, physics and force and motion. I plan on giving students frequent opportunities to utilize these materials during station activities or for additional enrichment. Students will even have opportunities to create games of their own by adapting the materials to subjects they feel the greatest need or desire to study.

Middle school is often a difficult transitional time for students, but it is my hope that this project will help foster a lifelong love for learning long after they graduate!
