Help me give my students digital and hands on materials where they can manipulate materials that represent DNA and all the steps needed to build proteins Including 3-D models of Amino Acids, the building blocks of proteins.
My students are from varying backgrounds and educational aspirations. I have some which receive special education services for social or emotional challenges and others with learning disabilities. Among my current students, there are over 14 languages spoken in their homes, 3 of which have extremely limited English skills and require translation support from either an aide or student helpers. Some have aspirations to go to college and become a doctor, and others are just trying to graduate from high school. Inspiring and engaging them all is a constant goal.
My Project
These colorful models and kits will bring to life the workings of DNA, RNA and how they work together to link amino acids to build proteins! Hands on materials are important for all students, but are especially helpful for those who are English learners and those with learning disabilities.
With the magnetic nucleotides, students will be able to model DNA and RNA structure, and follow the effects of gene mutations that they introduce themselves.
The online support materials will allow them to continue that learning with online simulations. The amino acid kits will take this one step further and allow them to build 3-D amino acid chains (alias proteins) and see how they fold before and after mutations. This will be a huge boost to their learning and engagement! I can't WAIT to have these in the hands of my students!
