Kate DiCamillo said, "Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift."
My school serves a diverse population and is home to a wide demographic, and technology is part of their everyday lives.
A large percentage of our students are on free or reduced meal plans, and many do not have access to technology other than cell phones outside of school. Their abilities span from college-level reading levels to below basic, such as 1st or 2nd grade. Getting ALL students excited about English has been my mission since I first stepped foot into a classroom.
My Project
While freshmen are just learning the bell schedule of their new high school, I know that much of their success over the next four years depends on their literacy.
Having diversity in my classroom lending library is absolutely crucial for the literacy goals I have for my students.
When relateable, appealing titles are just a few feet away, I know from experience that my students will pick up a book and become engaged. It is crucial for all of my students to be reading at least on grade level, and these additions to my library will surely increase their Lexile scores.
With an increased Lexile score comes more fluency and proficiency on the ACT. I want to give my students every advantage to be successful on the English and Reading portion of that all important test.
