The students in our school are some of the most hardworking individuals I have seen. Especially in the music courses and in the band, they are disciplined, respectful, and help lead by example. My students come from the lower part of the scale, economically and many of them do not have resources at home to continue their learning outside of school.
Although they are not in the best situations, they are all leaders in the classroom, encouraging everyone to try their best to find success.
We work together to give each student a chance to learn new things daily, whether it is a life lesson or being able to read and play a new passage. Others are stretched past what they thought they would ever be able to accomplish. Bilingual students are always looking for ways to help those students that recently moved from Mexico and haven't grasped the English language yet.
We are in the middle of our Winter Percussion and Winter Guard season and the mallets and metronome are starting to wear down since they were already used for the main fall marching season. We would like to provide these materials for the students so they do not have the added financial burden.
The students at my school are extremely talented and would like to have the opportunity to play multiple instruments.
A lot of these students are not performing on the same instrument in these extra groups as they are in the concert band setting. It is an extra and new side to the performing arts that a lot of people are unfamiliar with, but the students have already seen and shown how it can have a positive impact on their lives and the lives of those in the community since they are part of something bigger than themselves. Giving them this chance will help them have more insight to reading music and the ability to play an instrument from a completely different family. This also leads to a more cohesive understanding of everyone in the class.
