Help me give my students the gift of reading. Hurricane Harvey destroyed our library and many of our classroom books. Please help me rebuild my classroom library.
I teach 4th grade reading and writing in Rockport, Texas at Fulton Learning Center. Our school is very low socioeconomically. Many of our students are very poor and struggle from day to day to make ends meet. Last year we had Hurricane Harvey devastate our town. This category 4 hurricane destroyed our schools and we were out of school for 6 weeks until we could get makeshift classrooms up and going. When we did return to school, it was amazing to see how resilient the kids were. They were so excited to be back and to get back to normal. However, this was a "new normal" for us.
My students are eager to learn.
I teach ELAR and it is my passion to foster a love of reading in them that will last a lifetime! It is so rewarding when my students get so excited to read or it's time to go to the library!
My Project
It is my goal as a teacher to foster a love of reading for my students. Having many types of resources is a must if I am to do that. For example, I have used these "Storyworks" magazines in the past and the students absolutely love them. The magazine includes both fiction and non-fiction articles, as well as activities. Currently, we are using my "Storyworks" magazines from five years ago.
Unlike books and worksheets, "Storyworks" provides the students with current articles and pictures that captivate them.
Two of my favorite things are that the magazine usually has a paired passage of fiction and non-fiction and always includes a play or readers theater. I think the readers theater is probably my students' favorite!
