I teach kindergarten in a Title I northern California elementary school where about 50% of our student population qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast. I have several second language learners, two identified special needs children, some students who have gone to TK or Preschool, and some who are starting their first formal education.
My students are taught to believe in being creative as they learn to read, explore numbers, and problem solve in both math and science in small collaborative, differentiated groupings with an emphasis on personalized learning as part of our daily workshops.
My Project
My students need this cubbie storage cabinet so they can have easy access to the supplies and materials they need to work on the skills they need to be successful this year. Kindergarten skills are the foundation for academic success throughout a student's academic journey.
In our classroom, we have a personalized learning system that is differentiated for the needs of each student as they learn the skills needed to be a reader, writer and mathematician.
My goal is to get all the supplies such as magnet letters, alphabet builders, linking cubes and more out of packed, closed off cabinets out into this cubbie unit so when a student is working on their sight words, they can grab the magnet letters or when a student is working on comparing numbers, they can get the manipulatives they need. With this cubbie unit, students can work independently while I work with small groups. I won't be in charge of getting the materials they need. They will be in charge of choosing what they need and then putting it back when they are done.
Thank you for reading our proposal and hopefully, supporting my amazing Kindergarten students who want to be readers, writers and mathematicians!
