Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse, inquisitive group of 4th graders. 76% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Most of our students live in the neighborhood of our school. We don't have the resources available at our school to do some of the exciting lessons that are possible with the Next Generation Science Standards. Nothing gets them more excited than a trip to the STEAM Lab. They work in teams on projects and are always enthusiastic when talking about their current project. They are problem solving, innovative, inquisitive, creative, thoughtful, scientists/technicians/engineers/artists/mathematicians.
My Project
Our school is located near wetlands yet our students don't know much about them. They play at the park near the wetlands but don't go explore the wetlands because it's wet and they don't have the right equipment such as waterproof boots or waterproof shoe coverings to get in there to see and investigate what is there. If students have the waterproof shoe coverings they can take their sketchbook and colored pencils, go into the wetlands, and do some observations of what they see and experience. The more our students know about their local wetlands, the more likely they will take an interest in the care of their wetlands.
