Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As I watch my children work on the floor, I see them trying to pull their clothing down enough so that they are not sitting directly on the cold, gritty floor. I would love for them to work in comfort on a nice, soft rug.
My students are active, enthusiastic learners.
They are full of energy and work best when the are out of their seats and moving around the room in centers or groups. Currently, we have linoleum tile floors and one small rug supplied by the school. The kids scramble for a spot on the rug when they have a choice of where to work, but sadly the rug only seats about 5 comfortably. Everything they track in from the sandy playground ends up on the floor, along with everyday dirt and dust. I sometimes cringe when I see them stretched out on the bare, dirty floor. They deserve a clean, comfortable place to learn.
My Project
I have requested a large rug that would accommodate all of my students. The rug has a map of the world on it which is always a fascinating subject for little kids. This would provide a comfortable place to learn and provide great conversation starters about the world as well.
Students can not learn until their basic needs are met.
When they are more concerned with how to get comfortable on the dirty, cold floor, they can not concentrate fully on the task at hand. This rug would enable all the students in my room (and students for years to come) to be clean, comfortable and cozy while reading and learning.
