Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school and community faced something that we never thought we would--devastating fires. In October of this school year, much of our city of Santa Rosa was destroyed by fires. It impacted our students, our families, our entire city and surrounding communities. We had many students and staff lose their homes due to the fires. Many students and staff were evacuated, some for two weeks or longer. Our school and all schools in our district were closed for 3 weeks. So many have lost so much. Our students and staff donated to help out in the relief efforts. Our students and staff have been through a lot this year, but together, we will rise.
Our math classes use CPM (College Preparatory Mathematics) which allows students to work together as a team while still completing individual work.
While working with a team, there are team jobs--Facilitators, Resource Managers, Task Managers, and Reporter/Recorders. We are trying to get them ready for jobs in the real-world and learn how to work with others.
My Project
It seems that our pencil sharpeners always break and don't last an entire school year. It looks like this pencil sharpener might hold up to the tasks my students present it year after year!
Not only do we need to sharpen our pencils, but we need to sharpen our skills!
We can do this by getting to the point and making math colorful and fun! When we work in teams, we make posters. Students like to be creative and this is where they can show off these skills. Having rulers, pens and colored pencils will make their posters come alive!
When working on math problems, having students come up individually or in teams around the room on whiteboards makes class more interesting than just sitting in their desks. Having another wall of whiteboards would allow students to get up an move!
