Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Tagalog, Urdu, Turkish, and Spanish are some of the many languages spoken by the children in my classroom. Our school is a Title 1, inner-city school where 90 percent of the children receive free/reduced priced lunch.
My children are extremely eager to learn and are very appreciative of everything that is given to them.
They love coming to school and are excited to begin each day.
My students face many challenges in their daily lives. Having the necessary materials to learn should not be one of them. The only way I can ensure my children are successful in their educational journey is to provide these tools to them.
My Project
Each morning the children should start their day with 2 sharpened pencils. This sounds easy enough, but it is an obstacle. In September, I supplied each child with a plastic hand held sharpener. These just do not cut it. They do not effectively sharpen the pencils but have become "good enough."
Something as simple as electric sharpeners would start their day off so much smoother.
They would be able to feel as if they were ready to begin their day prepared. A brand new day to learn with freshly sharpened pencils to help them. It is important that children take pride in their work. Having a sharp pencil would allow their work to be done in a clear, crisp, smudge free manner. Something as simple as a new pencil puts a smile on their face and now it will be even better with a point that they know will not break in the first five minutes of their day.
I would be so grateful to be funded for this. These sharpeners will be used for many children that pass through my classroom door for years to come. Thank you so much for considering this proposal.
