My students need various sizes of volumetric pipets for all levels of chemistry when preparing and learning about solution concentrations and acid-base titrations.
I currently teach chemistry to students in an urban school district. We have approximately 46% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. The diversity of the students is refreshing and I am impressed with their desire to learn, even though many have family situations that are very difficult.
Each year we have a limited school budget for our science department. We usually choose to purchase consumables and if funds are left over, we identify equipment that needs repair or replacement. In my current proposal, I have identified the need to replace and equip the lab with volumetric pipets. We currently have too few and those we have are in pretty rough shape. Teaching students about concentration and proper solution prep requires the use of the right equipment. The accurate preparation of solutions is also required when students perform acid-base titrations. Currently, students use equipment that provides large sources of error and their results are discouraging. This does little to inspire them to do more experimentation.
Having the proper equipment, and enough of it, will enable classes to perform experiments where the results are believable and accurate. They will also be able to complete them in the time allotted because they will not have to wait to use the pipets.
Your help will ensure that when I teach my students about this area of chemistry, they will be able to use equipment that provides them with success. Many of my students look forward to school as their only opportunity for success. Providing them with real-life laboratory experiences is empowering for both the students and the teacher. I share in their excitement and enthusiasm when they succeed.
