I am a first year teacher in a very rural area. The school is K-12 with not a lot of children throughout - the senior class last year had a total of 7; it is consolidated with the nearby school.
My class consists of 11 students total - 7 girls and 4 boys.
From previous teachers these students are best described as being a loving family since there are so little of them. I cannot wait to get them in my classroom and show them new things.
My Project
Long gone are the days of students sitting in one spot all day long. Students need to be able to move and get wiggles out while they are sitting. These are active children who "can't sit still," but I don't necessarily want them to.
Research is scarce, but what has been noticed is that students benefit greatly when they are able to use flexible (alternative) seating options.
Those benefits include things such as using excess energy and higher engagement to their activities.
If you come into my class you will see my students actively engaged in their lesson, while using the best seat for them. That seat may change day to day, but it is what will get them on their best for that moment.
