First graders come to school filled with enthusiasm and excitement for learning, life, friends and interest. They are marked for tremendous growth, lost teeth, emotional highs and some lows as well. First graders jump into projects with both feet and whole heartily. My students are no different.
Their quest to understand the world and make sense of it comes with high energy.
My students backgrounds are rich in representing many different cultures and languages with one common purpose, to learn!
My school is 90% free and reduced price lunch. Our families are counting on us to educate their children and provide an education that will allow their students to be prepared for the future that awaits them.
My Project
First graders are full of energy and are in a constant state of moving and exploring but are expected to sit 7 hours a day at a table in a chair. This is a nearly impossible feat for them and let's be honest for most adults! Go to the nearest coffee shop and you will see a range of seating from tables and chairs, bar seating, couches etc. People like choice and students are no different!
I would like to offer my students a chance to choose from a range of different kinds of seating while they are learning.
I believe this choice will increase their engagement. The wiggle seats and balance balls will allow for movement while they are at their tables. This movement will help increase their concentration, oxygen flow to their brain as well as improve their core body strength.
The lounge pillows and lap tables allow them to spread out and have their own space for learning. Students naturally like to spread out. I have a completely carpeted room so the floor space really provides many more spaces for learning to occur.
I have thrown in a few other important supplies that will help support our learning like a pencil sharpener, book boxes for Daily 5 reading, and plastic sleeves to reduce the amount of paper we use.
These materials will not only empower my current students regarding their learning and discovering their learning style but all of those who follow.
