Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Upon entering the art room the other day, one of my students saw the supplies I had assembled and said, "I'm not sure what we're doing today, but I know it's going to be fun." The best learning happens when students are engaged in something challenging and fun. When students create two-and three-dimensional artworks from their imaginations (sculpting with clay, building with wood blocks or interlocking slot-a-shapes, painting, drawing and printmaking) they experience the kind of challenge that supports their intellectual growth and achievement.
Our Pre-K to 8th grade public school is located in an ethnically diverse, low income, inner city neighborhood in the Northeast.
Many of my students are very talented, but families can't afford private art lessons and art-camp in the summer. To be artistically successful, our students need a top notch, public school, arts education program.
My Project
Students will paint these glazes onto their ceramic creations to enhance textures and add interest and excitement to their ceramic pieces. With this selection of glazes, students will learn how to create a variety of exciting effects.
When students create with clay, they learn patience, they learn that it is important to follow rules, and they experience that sense of accomplishment that comes from turning an idea into an object made with one's own two hands.
My fifth grade special needs students have three ceramics projects in the works that need to be glazed. The opalescent glaze is for their free form textured bowls. This special type of glaze enhances texture and creates a dramatic contrast between the red clay bowl and the lighter opalescent glaze. The glazes in individual pints will be used for their fruit-shaped bowls and pinch-pot animals.
Here are some examples of how these glazes will be used for other projects in other classes: ceramic picture frames (1st grade), fish-shaped dishes (3rd), African-American inspired face jugs (7th) and coil pot/vases (7th).
