I teach in a rural jr. high setting, where the students have a variety of interest, from farming to gaming, and everywhere in between. There is also many different socioeconomic backgrounds in our area. In this setting I get the amazing opportunity to teach 8th grade science and a fly tying class. It is very difficult to get them excited science and how it is all around them. I want them to be excited to do something other than play video games. I want science to come to life for them.
Let's get them out and enjoying the world around them.
I also get the amazing and unique opportunity to teach a fly tying .
With these new vises will help us do that and increase the number of students who are able to take the class. And get the away from the video games that they are so use to playing all the time since Covid-19. There are many who would love to take the class but are unable because of the limited amount of tool that we have as resources. Any help would be very much appreciated.
My Project
I am trying to get students excited to learn about the outdoors around them. I want students to learn how science is all around them and the best way to learn that is in the outdoors. After all of the time that these students have spent on computers and video games indoors because of covid, they need to get outside see how there is science is all around them.
What better place to learn to science then the outdoors.
So through fly tying they get to learn a skill that they can use their entire life, it helps young people excited to be in the outdoors. This also will help students learn about ecosystems, technology changes, and what human footprint they can make.
It seems like since the start of Covid-19 that these students have been asked to spend tons of time in front of a screen. They have forgotten what it is like to get up and enjoy nature around them. Through these items, I can help students gain skills and the desire to enjoy the outdoors again. And see how science is all around them.
