Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an urban charter school that is designed to support students that are typically underserved in other school settings. We have a longer school year and a longer school day with many specific supports in place for ELL students. We've won the state department of education's "Beat the Odds" award for several years in a row, consistently ranking among the schools with the top performance on state tests.
Our students are at the forefront of everything we do.
We strive as a network to disrupt the system of inequities that exist in order to prepare our students for success in what ever areas they are passionate about!
My Project
Our school designs 2 week J Term workshops that are tailored to student interests. I have many 8th graders who are passionate about animals and want to be vet techs or veteranarians. So I've designed a two week project around animal behavior and animal anatomy.
One of the activities that I would love for my students to do is a mammalian dissection.
Not only will this be super engaging and hands on for them, it will also be a rigorous preparation for freshman year biology lab when they get to college!
Students will be lead through a thorough mammalian dissection with this carolina lab kit. We will pause in between each body system and learn specifics about the structure and function of each. For example, the students will learn about the 4 chambered heart and circulation, then spend a day dissecting the heart and the major artieries.
