Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a classroom where the students are expected to read but are only given outdated textbooks to learn about a new subject. Those students would be bored. Science World Magazines can bring the outside world into the classroom with rich, meaningful text that is relevant to the students.
My students are 8th grade students who come from middle to low- income , hard-working families.
More than 80% of our students are considered low income by federal standards and their parents work hard to help bring the next generation out of that category. My students come in lacking skills in science and have very little background knowledge and experiences. Many are reading at a level far below an average 4th grader and struggle to keep up with the new Common Core standards which require lots of reading and writing.
My Project
Students will use Science World magazines to help engage them in everyday science and experiences that occur all around them everyday. They will be able to have an interest in the technical reading material they are expected to be able to analyze, which makes learning more fun and meaningful. Students will be able to engage each other in conversations about science, thus furthering their learning in science.
Although my students may not have the opportunity to go to science centers and museums, they can still learn from all the science in the world by bringing it to them.
Bridging the gap that comes from students lacking the prior knowledge many of their peers have gives my students an advantage in the new Common Core Standards where they are expected to read and write technical subjects at an increasingly high standard.
