Our school's mascot is the phoenix. That mascot was chosen because our students come to us looking for a fresh start, and it is often their last chance at receiving their diploma. Our students often struggle with social/emotional maturity, as well as behavioral challenges.
We do our best to meet them where they are at emotionally and re-engage them in learning.
The alternative environment that we provide them gives them the opportunity to experience success in their education. This positive reconnection to their education puts our students back onto a path for success and allows us to build positive relationships.
My Project
Laptops would be an essential tool for our school for daily use as well as our state testing time. We are currently working with a small computer lab that holds 9 desktop computers. When our class sizes near 10-13 students we struggle to complete daily tasks, such as researching topics. When it is time to do our state testing our class time is largely impacted by the small groups that rotate in and out to complete their tests.
Additional computers, that are mobile, would allow more students to complete technology-based tasks without disrupting the flow of class.
Students would not spend class time sitting and waiting for their turn on the computers. With extra technology available, classes would be more able to incorporate technology skills into their lessons.
Our students are from a rural, impoverished area and are less likely to have access to technology at home. Without proper access to technology, and the skills to use it here at school, it is less likely that they will receive that chance elsewhere. We are doing everything we can to provide the best opportunities for our students that we can.
