My Students
I work in a Title I city school that is constantly cutting the budget. My students come from low income, high poverty families. Despite these challenges, I hope to give these children the same experiences students of the same age group get in other districts.
To educate does not mean merely to feed the students with knowledge but to help them to master the process of investigating and understanding what and why the knowledge is being fed to them.
Every day the students enter my room ready to learn and work together. I want them to have the same experiences that other children in schools have. Everyday I see the huge difference in the district I work in and in the district my personal children are in. My personal children have so much more, and I want that for the children I teach. Why should they suffer just because the district has no money?
My Project
Classrooms have been changing over the years because students are changing. The traditional classroom is starting to look a little different that it used to. This past year I lowered a table and raised a table for those students that like to either sit on the floor or stand while they are working. The new curriculum we are using is very intense for the students and requires them to sit for 120 minutes. I have a hard time sitting for that long so allowing the students to sit in non-traditional seats that allows them to wiggle is going to be their best option.
The cube chairs will allow students to either work in groups at a table or they can take their cube chair and flip it to use it as a single desk while sitting on the floor.
The wobble chairs will allow the students to wobble while still listening and working on their assignments. The fold-able chairs provide a more comfy place to sit while still working.
I added the reading canopy because this year some of my students liked to sit on the crib mattress that I provided for my reading corner. Having the reading canopy over them would make it feel more cozy and home like. Every year I also have 1 or 2 students that have a rough home life and sometimes they need to take a nap in the classroom. Laying under the canopy on the crib mattress would allow this to happen. Sometimes there is a need for a 10 minute cap nap so that the student is ready to learn at his or her best, we can not always control what happens at home, but we can help in the classroom as much as we can.
