Camden, NJ has been ranked as one of America's most dangerous cities. The majority of the students in my class receive free or reduced-priced lunch. Despite the challenges my students face living in this environment, they come to school eager to learn and grow. For many students, school is their safe place, and I want to create the best environment possible for them to feel safe, secure, and cared for. They are the future of this city and have the potential to improve their community.
We have an open area we are in the process of turning into a courtyard for the students to engage in gross motor activities.
We need tricycles, jump ropes, hula hoops, and a parachute for the children to develop their gross motor skills in a safe environment.
Living in an urban area many of these children lack a safe area to practice riding or lack access to the equipment. Without these opportunities they are unable to master these skills. We currently have four tricycles and a storage shed. With class sizes of fifteen students additional materials are needed to keep the students active. These materials will allow children to develop many gross motor skills in our new courtyard!
