Help me give my students the ability to track their heart rates in a visible and easily accessible way. More exercise means higher concentration in the classroom.
My elementary students come from all over Chambersburg. Each one is bright and each one faces the challenge of living with an emotional/behavioral disorder. The emotional support classroom is a place to learn regulation, problem solving, and community skills.
These students need extra access to sensory tools, special environmental accomidations, and physical and art opportunities.
Many of the students also come from families in distress. They need a home away from home, as their homes are, hopefully, on the mend.
My Project
We will take physical activity breaks in the middle of class blocks that are 40 minutes or more. Research shows that students who get their heart rate to the target zone are able to concentrate better on their academics throughout the school day.
We call this fitness time Tennis Club because we go into the gym to bounce tennis balls, play catch, and run laps.
I will teach students their optimal heart rates and we will measure our heart rates (and graph them!). And we will record how exercise increases our concentration. Thanks for teaching lifelong fitness habits and helping students heal their mind and body connection.
