Connecting with kids in ways they can relate to is a whole new challenge these days. Having a gaming system to get my students exercising throughout the day is a great way to connect with them.
I teach a special education life skills class at a public middle school.
Some of my students are autistic while others have mental impairments. In my eyes, they're just my kids though and I always want the best for them. My students are in 6th-8th grade and beyond covering the academics I am preparing them for the real world.
My Project
I am requesting an Xbox gaming system that comes with the Kinect accessory that allows for full body gaming. This makes it possible for anyone to be successful since it doesn't involve a controller. My students used to have adaptive PE, but with budget cuts that was taken away. We now have PE with regular students which is some ways is a benefit, but it others it's not. If we can increase physical activity on a daily basis there are many benefits which include; improved fitness levels, controlling weight gain, improved general motor functions, and increased self esteem and happiness. Right now we do stretches and some aerobics throughout the day, but this would be a great way to motivate students to move.
I understand a first glance an Xbox seems frivolous, but this would be a treasured item in our classroom with endless potential.
Beyond being used for physical fitness it would be a great motivator for my students. I look forward to the day I get to surprise my students with such a wonderful gift.
