My Students

I teach third, fourth and fifth-grade reading in a school in an impoverished area in upstate NY. My students are a diverse group with various learning needs and challenges. We are a Title I school, which means that over 87% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. My students come to school and do the best they can every day even though they face many challenges outside of the classroom. My goal is to get my students excited about reading and help to bridge the gap between where they are and grade level expectations.

My Project

Having new books will make a significant difference in our classroom.

Getting "hooked" on a good book will make all the difference in the world for my 4th graders!

Our 4th grade classroom is severely lacking high interest books with a low readability level that students can use to learn how to read. Having more texts will allow students to expand their comprehension and create a love of reading.

For many of my students, reading is a difficult and challenging task that doesn't necessarily bring them joy. High interest books with a low readability level engages students with content they want to read while setting them up for success!
