Have you ever read a book that you couldn't wait to recommend to a friend or family member? As a child, I loved Judy Bloom and her Ramona character. As I read each book, I felt a connection to Ramona. She reminded me of myself. As I watch my 4th graders read during their 30 minutes of silent reading each day, I can see the excitement on their faces. I occasionally hear a chuckle or full out burst of laughter. The emotional connections my students have with characters in their books is such an amazing feeling.
My students are avid readers who love self selected reading.
I have seen an increase in reading stamina since our district adopted the American Reading Company (ARC) program. I would love to be able to provide a variety of book series for my students. I remember reading the Harry Potter series and waiting eagerly for each book to be released. I want my students to feel the same way! I think author J.K. Rowling said it best with her quote "It's the books you read when you are young that stay with you always."
My Project
These books will be a welcomed addition to my classroom library. My students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. They will have books in their hands that they enjoy, which will grow them as readers.
Each day as I watch their silent reading, I am mesmerized by the engagement, laughter and excitement.
