This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students do not come from very wealthy families. In fact, most of my students receive a free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students do not have books in their home other than what I send home with them. I try to incorporate free reading into their day at school because I know the value of reading and where it can take your mind. Often times they cannot find a quiet spot to read at home to get lost in a book.
My Project
The only material that I am requesting for this project is a classroom carpet. Currently, we are using used carpet squares to serve as our classroom carpet. Each day, I have to put the carpets down and pick them up at the end of the day. The carpets are getting worn and we are in need of a new, kid friendly carpet that can be a permanent part of our classroom. I want a quiet place for students to go to read at. Many of my students tell me that they do not have their own bedroom or even their own bed. Living spaces are very cramped so giving them some personal space in my classroom would be a luxury that they do not have at home.
