This is my first year teaching first grade! I am honored to have the opportunity to work alongside my first graders over this next year . Like most 6-7 year olds, my students will be tactile learners. This year I want to provide my students the best possible environment as possible.
My students will learn best through hands-on, interactive activities.
I work in a Title I school in which 100% of the students can receive free breakfast, and over half qualify for free/reduced lunch. I want my students to find community and acceptance within the walls of our classroom and leave with a love of learning.
My Project
We have been able to assemble an amazing classroom library so far this year in our room thanks to previous DonorsChoose.org projects- filling it with captivating books by fantastic authors. First grade is such a critical year in which my students are actually learning how to read. In years to follow they will be reading to learn so this year is important developmentally and fundamentally. Mastering phonics and being able to apply their phonemic awareness to their reading is critical.
I want nothing more than for my little firsties to leave our classroom with a love of reading.
I want them to sing about their "white shoes" with Pete the Cat, to understand what true friendship is alongside Frog and Toad, fly on a dragon with Elmer, and drive a bus with Pigeon!
My husband is a carpenter and he build a rolling book display along with two benches unfortunately wooden benches aren't too comfortable unless you have some pillows or cushions to pair with them. We also are in need of a few area rugs for our classroom library. Being comfortable and relaxed while reading will lead my students to better comprehend their books and expand their prior knowledge. An inviting, cozy environment also creates a calmness and engaging place for students to get lost in a book.
