Our elementary magnet STEM school serves a population of urban and suburban students who love to read books that mirror themselves. Students attend our school from diverse backgrounds and with many different languages spoken and cultural traditions honored at home.
Our school library media center is where readers discover books that represent their diversity, whether it is race, gender, cultural or life situations.
My goal as the Library Media Specialist is to provide books to my students that mirror their lives.
All students in prek - 5th grade visit the library weekly, sometimes twice a week. My goal for next year is to start a before school bookclub for the older students using books that are diverse.
My Project
Help me start a before school book club in the upcoming school year with culturally diverse books for my 4th and 5th graders. Our books are selected from the grassroots organization Project Lit Community book list. Some of our students do not have the financial resources to purchase these books and I don't want anyone to feel they can't join because they couldn't afford a book.
These books are a mirror to the diversity of my students.
The books reflect the color, race, religions, gender, socio economic status of my students. Our book club will be able to share stories of our lives and facilitate conversations about our differences that should be celebrated not shamed.
