Help me give my students engaging books and materials that will motivate them to to read and write in English because learning English is difficult and these materials will make it easier for them.
I am the ELL teacher for grades 2-5 at a Title I school. I have 65 students on my roster who come from various countries around the world. My class includes Native American, Hispanic, Indian, Somolian, and Chinese students. Our school is a Title I school because a large population of students come from low income households, including my students. Many of my students live in multi-family homes. We live in a very isolated city in Wyoming that does not provide many employment opportunities. My students face challenges everyday that are unique to them because they come from households that do not speak English. ELL students require additional time and resources to become as proficient as their English speaking peers.
Funding this project will put books into the hands of students that are learning to read English as a second language.
Many of my students are fleeing political corruption, violence, and poverty in their home countries. As an ELL teacher, I teach them vital skills for success that include Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening in English. The materials that I have requesting funding for will provide materials that are specifically designed to educate ELL students.
My Project
These books and materials that I have requested will make reading enjoyable for my ELL students. The book sets have exciting subjects with great visuals that add meaning to the words in the text. These specific book sets are differentiated for struggling readers, but provide age appropriate pictures and subjects. This prevents older ELL students from being embarrassed about reading low level books.
Books sets allow each student to have their own copy of the book in their hands.
My ELL students will gain a deeper understanding of the words on the pages by matching them with the pictures in these award-winning books. The selected books focus on difficult comprehension skills such as main idea and drawing conclusions.
