My middle school students are going through a transitional stage in life. They are becoming young adults, but I don't want them to lose their enthusiasm for learning. Sometimes they need a place to reflect, read or study, but sometimes students need to move around and explore.
Our students need the opportunity to work independently on activities that stimulate their minds.
I provide the opportunity to do this in my library. I accommodate all grade levels, all learning types, and abilities. Not every student learns through lectures and worksheets. The library provides an opportunity for hands-on learning.
I read an article in a professional publication that has given me the idea to provide a green screen and iPad for students to create an immersive book review in which they can set a background scene that fits the story. Then I can use these reviews to help advertise the book to other students.
This project supports reading, technology, and creativity in students.
Students can make a simple book review using a background, or they can write a scene, ask friends to join them, and add props. We can record the book review on the iPad and share it with the rest of the school. Having students recommend a book has a greater impact on its circulation in the library.
