Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at West Mesquite H.S., which is a Title 1 school. Over 70% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Over 80% of the students come from a minority and low socioeconomic background. These students face challenges and situations that kids their age should not even have to deal with. The
West Mesquite HS has now gone BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), it is a marvelous idea, but the only problem is that most of them do not have those devices with the needed capabilities.
Teachers are creating lessons that will allow students to use devices, but most of them have to sit out of the activity and do something different instead. I would love to be able to have enough devices so that they can at least share in groups of four, so that they can still participate in the engaging activities that will help better their learning.
My Project
The 1st day of school I created QR codes that linked to Goggle forms for students to fill out personal information about them and even to videos that I was showing so that they could keep them. I did not realize that so many of our students did not even have a phone with those capabilities. Less than half of my students (my class sizes range from 18-28 students) have a smart device. So my plan to infuse technology somewhat was inflated. I am wanting to order tablets for my students. I would love for every student to have their own tablet but it would be wonderful if we had enough where they could work in small groups together with the tablets. The students will be able to use these tablets to download educational apps (QR scanner & edmodo) and they will be able to use the Internet to go to websites such as poll everywhere and educreations. These tablets will help enhance the students learning. They will have the opportunity to enhance their technology skills and their math skill
Our students here deserve to have lessons that incorporate technology and requires them to use it (especially since this is the age of technology), so I plan on creating as many math lessons that will have the students using technology to help them gain better understanding and make the lessons enjoyable.
I enjoy using QR codes, Polls, Educreations, and thing links to enhance the lessons. Most students find math to be quite boring, and I can understand because it involves a ton of repetitious p
