My students need flexible seating, fidgets, fluorescent light covers, designated places to move and relax, and noise-canceling headphones to support their growth in all academics.
In all honesty, my students are new to me. I'm moving from Illinois to Arizona to meet them for the first time. Despite not knowing their interests or hobbies, I am prepared to ensure we will have the best year yet.
Each day that passes I find a new question to ask, I can't wait to meet my third through fifth-grade class!
SRE is located in Maricopa, Arizona and operates year-round. All that means is I'll have more time to get to know my students throughout the school year.
My Project
Over the last year, I put together a Zones of Regulation Room for my previous school in Illinois. In just a few short months, I saw how the ZONES room impacted many students. One student went from 7 office referrals in a month to only one office referral in the same time span. This year I am packing up my classroom, but leaving the ZONES room behind, as I make my way to Arizona.
The ZONES curriculum provides strategies to help students become more aware of and more independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, managing their sensory needs, and improving their ability to problem solve conflicts.
The ZONES room provides students with a safe environment for regulating their emotions. While in the ZONES room, students are asked to identify which of the four ZONES they are in: green, yellow, red, or blue. Upon determining what ZONE they are in students choose a tool to help get them back to green, ready to learn.
At the moment, my toolbox is nearly empty. I need your help to fill my toolbox and design a ZONES room in my new classroom. That being said, I am asking for many different tools in hopes of supporting all my students.
With your support, students will have a bean bag chair to sit on and chill. With the diffuser's essential oils in the air and an MP3 player playing calming music, students will soon feel at ease. Fluorescent light covers will dim the harsh lights while noise-canceling headphones will drown out unnecessary noise. Smelly markers provide creative kiddos with an outlet while fidgets keep their hands busy. The folding mat and spots will be used to help students practice moving from one zone to another.
