My Students
"Can't wait for Friday!" --- "How come?" --- "Because it's Historical Fiction Friday!"
LJH is a middle school in north-central Illinois where we have 85% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Recently, I jumped on my Reading teacher wife's bandwagon, in which she reads a book a day to her classes, and created Historical Fiction Fridays. Every Friday I introduce a book that fits into the historical fiction genre. I will either give a book talk, read the first chapter or read an interesting excerpt from the book. I try my best to line up our current topic or current events with the book I choose. I'm usually fishing through my wife's classroom library, which is on point, to find our next book. I would love to build up my class library with something for us history lovers.
My Project
Having a choice is human right. Having a choice at school is just...cool. Social studies isn't always thought of as helping with reading levels or reading comprehension.
Having historical choices when it comes to books is essential. Many of these titles, such as Black Duck, can bring a perspective to an era our students might not have. The majority of history texts are 1-2 years above grade level. The more we can put literature in these kids hands, the more they can grasp history. And maybe, just maybe they can have a lot of fun on these quests for knowledge.
