I work in an inner city school with students who come from a diverse population. Some students reside in middle school housing while others stay in state funding housing. They also come to the high school from three very different middle school experiences. Many students visit the library as an escape from the pressures of academics and testing, to meet friends, to read, and to be able to be themselves. We target the struggling readers so that they will have a more successful high school experience.
My Project
The students I am targeting are reluctant readers and have been put in special English classes due to their test scores. The teacher and I struggled for the first month that she brought them down as a class to get them to willingly read. The students discovered our graphic novel collection and started devouring the books.
My students need high interest graphic novels that grab their attention and encourage reading.
Our budget was cut for this school year, and I want to purchase more graphic novels to add to our collection so the students continue to be excited about reading and have a choice as to what to read.
The more they read and enjoy reading, the easier reading will be for these students, and the more involved they will be in their education.
