My students need private listening centers (cd players, batteries, 9 books with cd's) and two WiFi tablets to meet individual reading needs and interests.
We get FIRED up about reading in first grade. My students come in reading at various levels and need a wide variety of books (and technology) to read. In order to provide differentiated instruction that matches their needs and interests, I need to provide a rich environment of reading choices.
My school is a suburb in Michigan.
We have many children that speak different languages (German, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, and Hebrew) in the home. My first graders come to school with all sorts of experiences (travel, resources, after school activities etc.). The children come from an affluent community with high expectations. I usually have 22-25 students a year with little to no transfers during the school year. Our school scores well on standardized testing and is working to change as the world changes with technological advancements. My first graders love technology and reading!
My Project
This project will provide a rich school environment that allows students to grow naturally in reading and research skills. This project allows children to touch, listen , see and experience literature. The listening center enter items (cd player, batteries and book on Cd's) will allow readers of all levels to read books that they find interesting. By increasing my collection of individual reading choices the children will be motivated to read more. The Kindle Fire tablets will also allow me to meet the needs of higher/gifted children in my class. The tablets will allow for more differentiated instruction that involves higher level reading choices and research of various topics. I have been unable to meet the needs of my higher students because we don't have resources in the classroom for them to extend their learning or interests. My parents ask why don't we have more technology? My classroom environment needs to move with the times. We need to get FIRED Up...read and research more!
Get FIRED Up About Reading will allow all students to extend their love of reading and learning.
Children learn in many different ways and it's my responsibility to provide those experiences. Today's classroom should provide interest and experiences that will push each student further. I am sure the books on CD and the Kindle Fire will enrich our environment. This project will help the children become FIRED Up about reading and research with today's books (digital)!
