I teach 5th grade inclusion students. Their disabilities range from Autism to ADD/ADHD. Since their disabilities vary, they each have individual needs when it comes to school and learning. My students have daily battles that they struggle with that could be as small as not being able to sit still in a desk and focus or something as big as having anxiety every time a storm, big or small, rolls in.
My students strive to be successful and want everyone to be proud of them just like every other child.
However, they often require help overcoming their daily struggles to achieve that success.
My Project
By having flexible seating in my classroom, my students will be able to easily find a comfort level, focus more on learning, and get their classwork completed in a timely manner. Most of my students find it very hard staying still in their desk, which can cause them to become very irritable leading to them not pay any attention to classroom instruction and/or not completing classroom work.
With flexible seating choices, my students will have the opportunity to choose what works best for their learning style depending on their learning needs.
When children are given choices, they begin to feel more independent and begin to perform better. By having just a small choice, such as seating they would prefer, they will be able to focus on instruction quicker and stay engaged longer. Once the students are able to see that they can be successful in the classroom, grades and behavior will start improving.
