Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
THS is located in a rural community located on the far east side of El Paso county in the small town of Tornillo, Texas. Tornillo is a farming community and it is located a few miles away from the Mexican border. Most of my students are Hispanic and we are a Title I district. All of my students qualify for the Free School Lunch Program. While there are many barriers and challenges my students face every day such as the low socioeconomic situation of most families and the fact that for most of my students English is their second language, they have learned that if you work hard, they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. It is that determination and commitment to better themselves and their ability to set high yet realistic goals and dream big that really defines my students. My story is not much different from most of theirs. I graduated from THS in 1995 and have been working for the district since 1997 serving this wonderful learning community in different positions and capacities and always encouraging others, young and "not too young", to develop a passion for learning and giving back.
My Project
These items will be earned by the first students who take, pass, and obtain more than one industry-based certification before the end of this school year. All my students have the same chance of competing for the certifications and for these great useful prizes/incentives graciously sponsored by your generosity.
Students will be able to use these Windows tablets during their journey as students to continue learning and expanding their knowledge and exploring employment, military, and other career options and opportunities after high school.
