I have such a hard time choosing books at the library. I am the kind of person who can walk the aisles of the bookstore for hours. Unfortunately, during reading my students don't have that kind of time to leisurely select books. They need to spend their time reading!
My students are transient.
Due to population growth in our city, many have attended multiple elementary schools in their short educational careers. Also, many of my students come from military families and have been to multiple schools in multiple cities or countries.
My Project
During our read to self time, students are building their stamina to be able to read for 20-30 minutes at a time. Because we are dedicating such a large chunk of our school day to this independent reading time, it is so important that students are reading books that are on an appropriate level for them. These leveled book bins will allow students to quickly and easily choose a book on an appropriate reading level for themselves. In addition, having multiple copies of each title allows friends and classmates to read the same books and discuss them. It is so fun to hear students going out to recess chatting about the books they have chosen to read in class. I love seeing two friends sitting side by side reading the same book.
These leveled books and bins will help my students get busy reading.
They will spend less time selecting books and more time building their reading stamina. Their time will be best spent reading books at their reading level.
