My Students

The students I work with are struggling and reluctant readers who have hearts of gold. They are often 2-3 grade levels below their peers in reading and math but are survivors that have developed skills to get by in the classroom and present as "normal" as possible. One of the biggest challenges I have is getting materials in their hands that they can read.

They are driven and motivated to do well no matter what I throw at them.

We have a motto in my room, "You against you" and we emphasize personal best performances. While their progress is small, it is progress and they relish in the gains. Even if they read a one minute passage with only one more word than they did the week before within that minute, they will say, "Well, at least it's more than last week".

Many of my students come from low socioeconomic status homes and their education is their biggest hope for a future. I want to get materials to them that they feel successful with to keep the momentum of progress steady, do diffuse discouragement, and to break a cycle of failure and "slipping through the cracks".

My Project

Learning to read is challenging! Kindergarten, first and second grade kids are taught lessons and then sent to read, but given books containing concepts they haven't been taught and they feel discouraged. The books I am requesting are ones that kids will be able to read!

Giving kids decodable texts (books that contain concepts they've been taught) empowers and encourages them to love reading while reinforcing the concepts they have been taught.

Time is precious for these little kiddos and we need not to waste it, but to give them every opportunity to read, read, read in an effective and purposeful way!
