My students walk into our school library with excitement in their eyes. They can't wait to be able to let their imaginations go wild in the library MakerSpace. You can see students working on STEM activities by designing 3D models, constructing structures, learning about circuitry, or playing board games.
The library has become a place where students have an opportunity to experience technology they can't access otherwise because of their socioeconomic background, as well as a safe place for them to go to.
My school is a Title I school in Alabama that has a very diverse population of around 400 students. 100% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and some have no permanent home. Many might not come from a prosperous background, but they soak up every opportunity that they have to learn. This project will help the library gain materials to make the library an even more inviting and comfortable place for the students to relax and learn, despite their daily struggles when they leave school. This is an important goal of mine because every student deserves an inviting and safe place to go to.
My Project
The library media center is the hub of the school. It should be a place where all students feel welcome and comfortable. Our library already has increased usage by adding in lots of materials where students can complete projects and just stop by and spend some free time by playing board games, programing robots, and designing 3D models. The thing our library lacks is a bright and vibrant atmosphere that will draw students in to stay and will feel like it is a safe place for them to get away from their daily struggles.
Many of my students feel like school is the only safe place that they have because they never know from one day to the next where they will call home.
Homelessness is a sad fact that many students face every day, but it is not something that has to define them or define their future.
This project will allow our library to become that place where students can get away when they need a safe and comfortable place by adding comfortable furniture and flexible seating, as well as add a much needed pop of color that will draw in middle schoolers. I can't wait to see my students relaxing in the chair or sitting around on the stools and just being themselves.
By donating to this project, you will help our students love our library and school even more. It will give them a place where they will look forward to being because they know it is where they can just be themselves without worry. We hope that by creating this environment it will encourage them to be in school everyday because we want to not only see them be there, but we want to see them excel in school.
