My students need outdoor blankets, screened canopy, and drawing and painting materials to exercise our minds as well as our bodies while learning outdoors.
I teach in an urban setting. Please support 49 bright young minds learning in a Dual Immersion setting learning to read, write, and communicate intellectually and socially in English and Spanish. 74% of our student population are English language learners and over 50% are considered low-income and receive free or reduced price lunch. Being that I teach in an urban setting, many of our students do not spend as much time outdoors and active as would be considered healthy. This is made worse by new ideas that recess is not a productive way for children to spend time learning at school.
Given the current ideas about learning and time spent outside I would like to take my class of students outside once a week every week.
In order to maintain this level of health, fitness and outdoor time observing, writing, questioning and exploring, we would benefit tremendously from having new materials to support outdoor learning and increased movement to use both indoors and outdoors.
Knowing that fresh air, exercise and movement are important to learning, I am confident that our students will gain new experiences, deepen their confidence in themselves to do things that they have not done before.
My Project
Typically when I think of children and health, wellness and sports, I forget to think about how being mindful and outdoors contributes to their many aspects of learning. Having outdoor blankets will be convenient and comfortable for the students to take with us as we explore and learn outdoors. The blankets will provide clean places to sit and they will be light weight and travel with us as we explore outdoor learning spaces, the school forest and nearby parks and natural areas.
We will use the art supplies as part of our outdoor learning, wellness and exercise we will exercise our ability to be observant and mindful.
Each student having their own drawing and painting journal will allow for student led questioning, and deeper learning, observing and exploring. With these materials we will be exercising and stretching our bodies as well as our minds.
For students to have their own, organized materials will motivate them to continue to stretch and grow as we explore the outdoors, art and all that will surround us. This will stretch our critical thinking and questioning while we draw, paint, spend time outdoors and read and write.
