FIRST LEGO League teams in our elementary school are flourishing. My elementary school students live in a rural community and are just beginning to explore technology. As students begin to dream about their future careers, our goal is to bring technology alive and allow students to experience a hands-on approach to STEAM fields and careers.
Exposing students to opportunities in the math and science fields at a young age will provide a spark that may drive their exploration and desire to learn throughout their academic careers.
Our school district has adopted a career-focused environment from kindergarten through grade twelve. Weekly student instruction and exploration in our computer lab, show them the sky is the limit on their future goals.
My Project
Our elementary school's FIRST Lego League program continues to engage more and more students. Students in grades 3 - 6 join a team to research, build, design, and code around a yearly theme.
FIRST LEGO robotics has excited my students and has brought coding to life.
Research is conducted concerning a real-world problem. Students build and create worlds from their imagination using LEGOs. They design and build a robot from Lego's WeDo or Mindstorms EV3 brick. Code is written and the robot maneuvers around their Lego world. The incorporation of critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and core values of kindness and friendly competition mimic future careers in the science and math fields.
