Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students with intellectual disabilities and Autism in pre-K through grade 5 are often not independent enough to self-manage the germs in their environment. Most are learning the practice of hand washing, blowing their nose, and coughing away from people and objects. As they get into later grades they can benefit from lessons on how to care for their surroundings and then apply that for use at home. Having responsibility for cleaning in all their settings will help them throughout their life.
My Project
While student learn to clean their own hands with soap and sanitizer, their materials need regular disinfecting to prevent the spread of illness in the classroom.
A small washing machine can take care of daily messes on nap time pillows and blankets, soiled clothing from toileting, and shirts and socks that gets spills.
A portable dishwasher will sanitize toys that often go into the mouth after being used by different students. A lightweight vacuum will keep their play areas tidy and free from small contaminants. Life Skills students definitely benefit from learning how to do those tasks and can then take some responsibility at home and feel the pride of working in a family.
