Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have three Art I class with 36-37 students in each who will learn the history of Georgia O'Keeffe and her flowers and will practice the use of acrylic paints by creating a painting in the likeness of O'Keeffe's work.
My students are comprised of low-income families who are often unable to give their children the school supplies they need. The art department at our school is primary funded by a student art fee of $20 dollars a year for each student. The teachers are then to purchase the supplies needed for the year from those fees collected. Many of our students have been unable to pay the fee this year due to economic difficulties their parents are facing. As a department we have been very thrifty and have still been able to give our students the lessons in art making that are essential if these students are to go on and take more advanced art classes to potentially get into the Advanced Placement Studio Art class in which the students can receive college level credit in art. I would love to give my students the opportunity to create a lovely painting on a canvas board to demonstrate their abilities and the quality of work they produce.
The students are in need of 110 canvas board for 36-37 students in each of my three Art I classes; and one class-set of brushes. I was able to purchase the acrylic paints needed with the art fees collected, however, with this donation my students will be able to paint on professional looking canvas boards and with good quality brushes. I am hoping that with this experience, my students will gain new respect for the work that they produce, thus building confidence and potential for future artistic endeavors. Students will learn about Georgia O'Keeffe and the struggles she faced as a female artist of her time and about her long productive career. Students will gain an understanding of abstracting a form and the use of color to create emotion. I have taught this project for a few years now and every year it is an exciting and rewarding experience when the students complete their first painting and are in awe of the image they have created in front of them.
Your generous contribution will provide my students with the materials to feel like a professional artist. You will empower their sense of confidence in the artwork they produce and encourage them to continue taking art and beauty seriously in their lives. You may even help that one (or more) student realize their dreams of being an artist.
