Help me give my students exotic and beautiful subject matter to paint and draw from. These animal skulls will help to make interesting subject matter for classroom still life settings that provide varied textures and forms.
Currently, I am teaching 10th and 11th-grade students who are creating powerful works of visual art by investigating dynamic compositions through the basic languages such as shapes, space, overlap, movement - all the elements and principles of art. This spring, we are studying the complex colors and application of drawing, collage, and painting techniques. We are learning to create potent content through various imagery juxtaposition and to ultimately question the intents and process of making art by transforming materials through techniques.
Our students use still life subject matter to create beautiful and moving pieces that study composition, values of light and shadow, and a variety of textures of organic and man-made objects.
Our school is a specialized high school in the heart of New York City servicing students from all five boroughs and all family backgrounds. It is a haven for artistically minded students as well as a powerhouse for helping future artists achieve their college and career goals.
My Project
Being in a New York City public school, our students have very low chances of making work from en plen air situations that capture the imagination and scope of nature. Working from a natural environment allows for the interpretation of forms and textures as well as play with lighting and depth that cannot be achieved through working from a flat printed reference image that sadly, many classroom teachers rely on.
These animal skulls will provide a doorway to the transformation of imagery and materials that our natural world resides in and so is always the source of new thoughts and progress in our human society.
Using Georgia O'Keeffe's works based on landscapes and skull subjects as an inspiration, I would like to provide the same learning experience for my students.
