Help me give my students reliable bow compasses for geometry and a translucent reflection tool that is extremely useful when studying symmetry in our math class.
Our students in the Personalized Pathways Program at our high school earn their credits by completing several projects, tied to both academic and workplace standards, throughout the school year.
Our students are intelligent, funny, and empathetic - for their first project, they have chosen to build care packages for homeless shelters!
My Project
Do you remember your high school geometry class? You might be conjuring images of proofs and the Pythagorean theorem... but, did you forget the fun stuff? While mathematics can often be thought of a place for abstractness, it is important to remember that we begin with the concrete. The tools that we are requesting will give students a strong foundation from which to build.
I have requested a class set of a bow compass.
Sure, it's a (drawing) compass, but what makes this special is that it locks in place. Too many of my students have been frustrated by cheap compasses that have shifting radii. This ends today!
We have also asked for translucent reflection tools. Oh, the things you can do with this simple piece of plastic: find the line of symmetry, create a line of symmetry, see reflections in real time, draw reflections in real time, verify congruence, find the best series of ricochets (like in billiards or mini-golf), etc.
Students love using these tools in mathematics class. Here's how I know: 1) they'll be really quiet, working away, 2) they begin arguing with each other over the best ways to do something, and 3) they forget that mathematics classrooms can sometimes be scary places!
