This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The school district that I teach in is very economically disadvantaged. Almost 90% of the children are on free and reduced lunch. The district is lacking the funds to provide the basic supplies needed for students every day in a math classroom due federal budget cuts.
My students are 7th and 8th grade students.
These are students who will be taking Math 7 and Geometry. The school is a suburban school with an urban population in the Pittsburgh area. These are students who are on free and reduced lunch that deserve just as good of an education as every other student out there.
My Project
My students need 25 simple calculators and dry erase erasers for math class. The calculators will be used daily in class to reinforce the skills learned when appropriate. The school does not have the funding due to federal government cuts to provide more calculators for the school district. On a daily basis I use dry erase whiteboards to check for understanding and provide immediate feedback. I have the whiteboards from previous years and I purchase the markers myself but and asking for the help to purchase the erasers. The kids love using whiteboards in class.
This donation will make a difference.
With the calculators, students will be able to show some of the required skills needed for the school year and for state exams at the end of the school year. Their success math will continue to inspire them in other areas as well.
