My students need 2 digital cameras in order to take pictures of real-world and natural occurences of geometric concepts to include in their digital stories.
Real World Geometry and its concepts are all around you. In order to examine these concepts the students need to capture images they can analyze and manipulate. We do not have cameras that the students can utilize for this project at this time.
My students have been working on several projects utilizing technology.
I find that they are much more driven to produce quality work when I utilize the technology tools they are used to outside of their life at school. Our challenge is that they do not always have access to this technology in this school. These cameras would allow us to capture digital pictures and video that can be used in numerous projects.
I challenge my students in every project to think about how math is and will be used in their lives. This connection is a very important connection for them to make if I hope for them to remember what they are learning. My students are both the highest and lowest achievers. I have found that no matter who they are that technology is a common way to get great products from them.
My Project
Currently, we only have one school camera that really isn't allowed to be used by students. These cameras could be used by students to capture images of where math is seen in the real-world. These particular cameras can also capture video. I have in the past also had students create videos to demonstrate knowledge of mathematical concepts. I previously let them utilize my own camera, but would feel better if I didn't have to bring my own personal family camera in for these projects.
This project encompasses the idea that math is all around you everyday.
It also utilizes standards in the mathematics and the ICT Literacy standards that are required of every student prior to reaching high school. These technology standards are an important part of all curriculums because students must have a great understanding of technology and how to adapt to the changes in technology in order to be successful later in life.
